When checking out Krabi for our holiday I was a bit worried after reading reviews about Ao Nang, that I was going to find a new Costa Brava, with clothes shops, supposedly local restaurants and travel agents. And I wasn't far wrong when I got round to visiting the strip along the beach. As a result we decided to stay a bit further out on Klong Muang beach, 12 kms from Ao Nang and 25 from Krabi town. Quite a calm and reasonable pace here, not much in the way of hotels, but enough in the way of restaurants, although it soon became necessary to hire a scooter to get around as the song-thaew don't travel this route.
Krabi town itself is not much, at least I didn't find anything apart from the magnificent newish temple not far from the centre to visit, and just opposite the new Museum of Contempory Arts. A short walk down by the river and that was it. I did find though that it was certainly 2/3 baths cheaper for a litre of petrol for the scooter.
Ao Nang is really the centre of Krabi. Practically all you want can be found here (even a McDonalds) except perhaps a bit of peace and quiet. Main jump-off point for longtails out to the islands and also to Railey beach.
I did find also that prices in Krabi in general were higher than in Bangkok or on Ko Samui where I was a year ago.
Massage here averaged 450/500 bath - Ko Samui 250
Scooter hire here short period 250 bath Ko Samui 150
An average meal on Samui never paid more than 80 bath, in Krabi 100/150.
Fortunately there are lots of things to see and do around Krabi. Some reasonably close, some need at least a scooter and some it's easier with one of the numerous tour companies.
The tiger cave temple is worth a visit, even if you can't make it to the top (1243 steps), as there is also a nature walk and the visit to the cave itself.
A long ride on the scooter took us out to Phanom Benja national park and the Huay To waterfall.
Closer to home is a superb nature walk through the jungle to the top of Hang Nak peak with some great views over the Andaman sea and down to Krabi town.

Hi Paul
Should take me along next time ... I'm a qualified geologist (although gastropods bored me stupid) ... :)
Lovely page, and excellent insight!
Regards Cathy
That's a bummer about your credit card, but otherwise this looks like a good place to stay. Fine photos as always! I like the sound of that nature walk.
Thank you, Paul, for helping me update my Krabi restaurant tip! Happy travels!
