A must do visit in Togo!!

Although almost 500 km. from Lomé, a very worthwhile trip is to visit the Tamberma people near Kandé on the road to Burkina Faso. These people live in almost stone-age conditions in a beautiful valley setting. Their houses, called "tatas" are built like small castles with quarters for the animals downstairs and the living quarters up on the terrace roof.

Directions: It is fully recommended to hire a chauffeur/guide to go, as very difficult to do on one's own.(please see my transportation tip).

A short day out from Lomé takes you to Lake Togo, about 30 km.In a superb setting you can sit and eat at the Auberge du Lac and really watch the world go by( or perhaps a few fishermen). Even better late afternoon to sip a cold beer and watch the sun go down.

a terrific thing to do when you are worn out, tired, full of dust or whatever, is take a day off at the swimming pool of the Hotel Mercure (ex-Sarakawa) in Lomé. An idyllic setting, probably the best pool in West Africa. It will cost you 3000,00 cfa for the day, including a towel but well worth it.

Directions: Along the sea 3 km. from Lomé centre heading east towards Benin.

A very original visit to be had here. See the first house of Togoville and the house where the peace treaty was signed by king Mlapa III and the German Nachtigal in 1884. A visit can be made to the church where Jean-Paul II made a benediction in 1985. It is unknown if he noticed the two village fetishes with their rather large sexual attributes. You may park behind the church. You will probably have to take a guide for the visit, so ask for Claude. Very well known and very capable. Listen very carefully to everything he says as there are things that are forbidden in the village. At the side of the church is the canoe in which the Virgin Mary made an appearance in 1973.

Directions: Two ways to get to the village: Go to the Hotel du Lac at Agbodrafo and hire a pirogue to take you across, or take your vehicle all the way round via Aneho and Glidji. Plenty of route- asking to do along this track, but worth it for the people you meet.
