About Perth Perth is great for sport and outdoor activities, we have vast amounts of sunshine and little rain. Outside of the city center the houses may be a little cheaper than the other cities. Public transport is good. The new railway line now goes south all the way to Mandurah. Site seeing... it depends what you want, there is only a little in the way of historic archecture (there was hardly anything here 100years ago!), there's not a lot of amazing night life either, but there are tons of places to visit and things to do. It can't be denied that Perth is a very isolated city, it's the second most isolated city in the world,to get to other cities you have to fly(or drive for several days), but with a population of around 1+1/2 million it has everything that bigger cities have without the congestion and raffic jams. There are amazing places all over WA to visit. Just start with the glorious beaches, go whale watching or swimming with the dolphins, hire a jetski or a kite surfer, go scuba diving or just laze on the beach.
Take a drive(seveal to see it all) down south to the Margaret river wine region, the surfing beaches, or the giant forets in the south.
If you like a longer trip(road trip or fly)there are many intersting places to the north eg The Pinnacles, Wave rock, Geraldton,Monket Mia, Exmouth(where the Ningaloo reef is)and tropical Broome. |
Getting used to Perth I have considered Perth my home since I emigrated 15 years ago from the UK, but a quite a few years ago I realised that I had become totally used to things that I found very strange when I first got here. Here is a list of what you get used to round here.
• You’re not surprised when a 4WD overtakes you in slow traffic by mounting the curb (just because it can) • You prefer Hungry Jack’s to Macdonalds • You have to go out in a thunderstorm and you realise you don’t have a raincoat or wellies • Every room in your house has ceiling fans, you have 3 large portable fans and a split system air-con in the lounge, but you only but you only have one portable fan heater. • You reply ‘Good Thanks’ when someone says ‘How are you?’ • At traffic lights. Red means stop, green means go, orange means GO FASTER • You plan a summer picnic without even contemplating that it might rain. • You realise that you haven’t put shoes on for the whole weekend, you even drove to the shopping mall and did the shopping barefoot • You have 5 bathers and no winter overcoat • You buy more sunblock than handcream • You never use a hair dryer in summer, in fact you think it’s a good idea to go to bed with wet hair. • You think it’s too cold to go swimming in the spring until the temps been over 30 for 3 days • You know that Whoop Whoop is not a real place and that you’ll get blank stares if you refer to lemonade as ‘pop’ • You drive a car with a 4 litre engine and think think a 2 litre is really a bit too small • It doesn’t surprise you that summer flowers grow in the winter • You plant your new lawn in autumn, not spring, because it will dry out before it can grow in summer. • You plant your house plants in the shade garden (outside) and they grow into a jungle |
