The Westerkerk ("western church") is a Protestant church, built in 1620-1631. Its spire is the highest church tower in Amsterdam, at 85 meters. It has a crown topping the spire which is the Imperial Crown of Austria of Maximilian I. Rembrandt was buried here in 1669 and there are also more painters buried here. In addition the Queen Beatrix I of the Netherlands (then Princess Beatrix) married Prince Claus von Amsberg in this church.
The church is right next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal. The church is also located close to the Anne Frank House where she, her family and others hid from Nazi persecution for two years during World War II. The Westerkerk is mentioned frequently in her diary. That's why there is a memorial statue of Frank is located outside the church.
La Westerkerk ("Iglesia occidental") es una iglesia protestante construida entre 1620 y 1631. Su campanario es la torre de iglesia más alta de Ámsterdam, con 85 metros, la cual está rematada por una Corona Imperial de Maximiliano I de Austria (presente en el escudo de la ciudad). Rembrandt fue enterrado aquí en 1669, al igual que otros pintores conocidos. Por otro lado, la Reina Beatriz I de los Países Bajos (entonces Princesa Beatriz) se casó con el Príncipe Claus von Amsberg en esta iglesia.
La iglesia está junto al distrito Jordaan, a orillas del canal Prinsengracht. También está cerca la casa de Ana Frank, donde ella se escondió durante la persecución nazi de la II Guerra Mundial durante dos años, junto a su familia y otras personas. Menciona el Westerkerk en su famoso diario con bastante frecuencia y por eso que hay una estatua dedicada a Frank fuera de la iglesia.

The Anne Frank House is a museum dedicated to this Jewish girl, who hid from Nazi persecution with her family and four other people in hidden rooms at the rear of the building. As well as the preservation of the hiding place and an exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank, the museum acts as an exhibition space to highlight all forms of persecution and discrimination. It opened in 1960 with the aid of public subscription.
The Secret Annex is the rear extension of the building. It was concealed from view by houses on all four sides of a quadrangle. Its secluded position made it an ideal hiding place for the Frank family. They remained hidden here for two years and one month until they were anonymously betrayed to the Nazi authorities, arrested, and deported to their deaths in concentration camps. Of the hidden group, only Otto Frank, the father, survived the war. Before the building was cleared a woman who had helped hide the families, returned to the hiding place against the orders of the Dutch police and rescued some personal effects. Amongst the items they retrieved was The Diary of Anne Frank. In this diary she speaks with real pleasure about a horse-chestnut tree, which is terrify ill nowadays. One way or another there is an association who is trying to save this tree, a real symbol of superation.
La casa de Ana Frank es un museo dedicado a esta niña judía, que estuvo escondida de la persecución nazi con su familia y otras cuatro personas en habitaciones ocultas en la parte trasera del edificio. Además de la conservación de la parte oculta del edificio y una exposición sobre la vida y los tiempo de Ana Frank hay una zona de exposición que resalta todas las formas de discriminación y persecución que existen. Fue abierto en 1960 por subscripción pública.
El Anexo Secreto es la parte trasera del edificio, que no se veía porque las casas formaban un cuadrado total que lo ocultaban, Esta posición secreta fue el refugio ideal esconderse la familia Frank. Estuvieron escondidos durante dos años y un mes, hasta que fueron traicionados anónimamente a las autoridades nazi, que los arrestaron y deportaron hasta su muerte en diferentes campos de concentración. Del grupo que se escondió sólo Otto Frank, el padre, sobrevivió a la guerra. Antes de que el edificio fuera desalojado una mujer que ayudó a las familias escondidas volvió al lugar escondido contraviniendo las órdenes de la policía holandesa y rescató algunos objetos personales, entre los que se encontraba el Diario de Ana Frank. En éste diario ella habla con verdadera ilusión sobre un castaño, que está bastante enfermo en la actualidad. De todos modos se ha creado una asociación que trata se salvar el arbol, un verdadero símbolo de superación.

Dam Square is the main town square in Amsterdam. Its notable buildings and frequent events (as street artists) make it one of the most well-known and important locations in the city. It lies in the historical center of Amsterdam, not far from the main transportation hub, Centraal Station. It is roughly rectangular in shape. A short distance beyond the northeast corner lies the main red-light district, de Wallen. On the west end of the square is the neoclassical Royal Palace, beside it are the 15th-century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. The National Monument, a white stone pillar erected in 1956 to memorialize the victims of World War II, dominates the opposite side of the square. Also overlooking the plaza are the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and the upscale department store De Bijenkorf.
La Plaza Dam es la principal de plaza de Ámsterdam. Sus destacados edicios y los frecuentes eventos (como espectáculos callejeros) convierten la plaza es uno de los lugares más importantes de la ciudad. Se encuentra en el centro de Ámsterdam, no lejos del príncipal polo de transportes, la Estación Central. Es prácticamente rectangular. A muy poca distancia de su esquina noreste está el principal barrio rojo, el Wallen. Al oeste se encuentra el neoclásico Palacio Real, junto a él la iglesia gótica del siglo XV Nieuwe Kerk (Nueva Iglesia) y el museo de cera Madame Tusseaud's. El Monumento Nacional, un pilar de piedra blanca erigido en 1956 para recordar a las víctimas de la II Guerra Mundial, domina el lado opuesto de la plaza. También dominando la plaza se encuentran el Gran Hotel NH Krasnapolsky y el enorme centro comercil De Bijenkorf.

The Nieuwe Kerk ("New Church") is a 15th-century church, with neo-Gothic elements. In my opinion it's the most beautiful building in "De Dam", but it's a pity is not a "real" church anymore, but an exhibition hall and a place for organ recitals. At least it still being used for royal coronations, most recently the crowning of Queen Beatrix I in 1980, and for royal weddings, the latest the wedding of crown prince Willem-Alexander to princess Máxima in 2002. In addition the national Remembrance Day service on 4 May takes place here, but there are not more religious uses of this wonderful building consecrated to St. Mary and St. Catharine. The Nieuwe Kerk was also a burial site for Dutch naval heroes.
La Nieuwe Kerk (Nueva Iglesia) es una iglesia del siglo XV, con elementos neo góticos. En mi opinión es el edificio más bonito del Dam, pero es una pena que ya no sea una verdadera iglesia, sino un centro de exposiciones y una sala de conciertos de órgano. Al menos se sigue usando como lugar de coronación del Jefe de Estado, la más reciente la Reina Beatriz I en 1980, y para bodas reales, siendo la última la del príncipe heredero Guillermo Alejandro con la princesa Máxima en 2002. Además se celebra aquí la misa del día del recuerdo nacional cada 4 de mayo. Pero ya no hay más uso religioso de este magnífico edificio consagrado a Santa María y Santa Catalina. La Nieuwe Kerk también era el lugar para enterrar a los héroes de la marina holandesa.

The Madame Tussauds wax museum, in the Dam, apparently is a very funny and impressive museum as his "father museum" is in London. In fact it is a sucursal of the well-know British museum, which as open different branches not only the Amsterdam, but also in Berlin, New York, Shanghai... I didn't visit it because I prefered to do more typical Dutch things but I would like to do it later if I'll return to the city. There is a big circular window on top of its façade where you can see visitors there doing funny dancings to their "public" in the Dam. I don't know if there is an advertisement there or not, but almost everybody was doing some funny thing!
El museo de cera Madame Tussauds, en el Dam, parece ser muy divertido e impresinante, como su "padre", el famoso museo de Londres. En realidad este es una sucursal holandesa de aquel, que ha abierto varias sedes, no sólo en Ámsterdam, sino también en Berlín, Nueva York, Shanghai... No lo visitamos porque preferimos hacer cosas más propiamente holandesas, pero si visitara la ciudad más tarde si me gustaría entrar. Hay una gran ventana circular en lo alto de la fachada que da al Dam donde se puede ver a los visitantes del museo haciendo tonterías para su "público" en la plaza. No sé si habría algún cartel invitando a la gente a hacer el tonto, pero el caso es que casi todo el mundo hacía algo simpático.

The National Monument is a high obelisk in the Dam square, erected here after the II World War. This is a memorial to the victims of the war and a monument to the liberation of the country. There are some scupltures which depicts the war (four male figures), the peace (a woman and a child) and the resistence (two men with dogs). Inside the obeliks there are 12 urns. 11 of them with sand from the 11 Dutch provinces and the 12th with sand from the Ducth graveyard in Indonesia. The monument was inaugurated the 4th of May of 1956, the national day of remembrance, by the Queen Juliana and since then each year the Queen visit this monument, lay wreaths and everyone keep 2 minutes of silence. It's really hard to imagine all the suffer of a country in current times, when this monument is always full of people that meet here with their friends just to have fun...
El Monumento Nacional es un alto obelisco en la plaza Dam, erigido tras la II Guerra Mundial. Hay varias esculturas que representan la guerra (cuatro figuras masculinas), la paz (una mujer y un niño) y la resistencia (dos hombres con perros). Dentro del obelisco hay 12 urnas. 11 de ellas tienen tierra de las 11 provincias holandesas y la duodécima tierra del cementerio holandés en Indonesia. El monumento fue inaugurado por la Reina Juliana el 4 de mayo de 1956, día nacional del recuerdo. Desde entonces cada año la Reina visita este monumento, deposita flores y todo el mundo guarda dos minutos de silencio. Es verdaderamente duro imaginar estos momentos de sufrimiento del país hoy en día, cuando este monumento está siempre lleno de gente que queda con sus amigos para divertirse...

The Royal Palace in Amsterdam, in the Dam, is one of three palaces in the Netherlands which is at the disposal of Queen Beatrix by Act of Parliament. In fact when I saw this building for first time I thought it was the town hall, but not the Royal Palace. Actually this building was opened has the city town hall in 1655. It was first a royal palace with Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, when he became King of Holland in 1806. After his investiture as King William I of the Netherlands, however, Amsterdam was made the official capital of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (the seats of government being Brussels and The Hague). The new King realised the importance of having a palace in the capital, and the Town Hall again became a royal palace. Currently it is used by the Queen for entertaining and hosting official functions, such as state visits, the New Year reception, and the presentations of different prizes.
It's a bit dark and not very beautiful, but aparently it is wonderful inside. In fact, in its time the building was one of many candidates for the title of the Eighth Wonder of the World. Also, for a long time it was the largest administrative building in Europe.

The Damrak is a wide avenue at the centre of Amsterdam, between Amsterdam Centraal railway station and Dam Square, running north-south. There are a lot of tram lines an one metro line running down it. Because of the former stock exchange building, the monumental Beurs van Berlage (now used for other purposes), and several other buildings related to financial activities erected there in the early 20th century, the term "Damrak" has come to be a synonym for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange in the same way "Wall Street" is synonymous with the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. The street was located on a rak (reach), a straight part of the Amstel river near a dam; hence the name.
Damrak es una avenida ancha en el centro de Ámsterdam, entre la estación de tren Amsterdam Centraal y la plaza Dam, llendo de Norte a Sur. Hay muchas líneas de tranvía y una de metro por debajo. El término "Damrak" se ha convertido en sinónimo de la Bolsa de Ámsterdam gracias al edificio de la antigua bolsa que se encontraba aquí, en el monumental Beurs van Berlage (ahora con otros usos), así también como por otros edificios relacionados con actividades financieras, tal como ocurre con "Wall Street" como sinónimo de la Bolsa de Nueva York y el NASDAQ. La calle se encontraba sobre un "rak" (parte recta del río Amstel) cerca de una presa o "dam", así que de ahí le viene el nombre.

The Beurs van Berlage is a building on the Damrak. It was designed as a commodity exchange constructed at the end of 19th Century. It is now used as a conference venue and as an exhibition centre. The building is constructed of red brick, with an iron and glass roof and stone piers, lintels and corbels. Its entrance is under a large clock tower, while inside lie three large multi-story halls formerly used as trading floors, with offices and communal facilities grouped around them. In fact the building looks like a church outside. Don't you think so?
El Beurs van Berlange es un edificio en el Damrak. Se diseñó como una Bolsa de Valores construida a finales del siglo XIX. Ahora se utiliza como una sala de conferencias y un centro de exposiciones. El edificio se construyó en ladrillo rojo, con un techo de metal y cristal, así como piedra en pilares, dinteles y ménsulas. Su entrada está bajo una gran torre con reloj, mientras que dentro hay halls distribuídos en tres plantas antiguamente usados como salas de negociación, con oficinas y servicios comunes en torno a ellas. En realidad el edificio parece por fuera una iglesia. ¿No lo crees?

Amsterdam Centraal is the central station of Amsterdam. It is one of the main railway nodes of the Netherlands and is used by approximately 150,000 passengers a day. The station building was opened in 1889. It features a roof span of approximately 40 metres fabricated in cast iron. The station is currently under reconstruction so it was a pity not to see this beautiful building without all the working tools in front of them.
The building of Amsterdam Centraal is situated on three man-made islands, themselves resting on 8,687 wooden poles which have been driven deep into the muddy and sandy soil.
Amsterdam centraal es la estación central de Ámsterdam, uno de los principales nudos ferroviarios de Países Bajos, usado por aproximadamente 150.000 personas al día. El edificio de la estación abrió en 1889. Tiene un techo de unos 40 metros fabricado en acero. La estación está ahora restaurándose, fue una pena no poder ver este bonito edificio en todo su esplendor, sino con todas las máquinas delante.
El edificio de Amsterdam Centraal está sobre tres islas artificiales construidas por el hombre, descansando sobre 8687 pilares de madera que han sido introducidos profundamente en el embarrado y arenoso suelo.
