This Triumphal arch is an archway structure built by the Universal Exhibition of 1888 as its main gate. It has some pieces of sculptures as the one in the front, named "Barcelona welcomes the nations" and the coat of arms of the other 49 Spanish provinces. It's located at the end of the Lluis Companys promenade which link this monument with the Citadel Park.
Este Arco del Triunfo es una estructura arquitectónica construida para la Exposición Universal de 1888 como puerta principal. Tiene algunas esculturas como la del frontal, llamada "Barcelona recibe las naciones" y los escudos de las restantes 49 provincias españolas. Se encuentra al final del Paseo Lluis Companys que enlaza el monumento con el Parque de la Ciudadela.

It's one of the most beautiful Gothic church in town. It was built in the 14th Century like a cathedral for sailors and merchants with the modest contribution of them. Its popular construction has inspired the best seller "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. The external structure is completly perfect: its main nave has 13 metres and each of the side ones has exactly 6'5 metres. The whole width of the church is the same than the height of the side naves and the difference between them and the main one is 6'5 metres, as the width of them.
The main façade has an impressive Gothic rose window from the 15th Century, the sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul and two belfries.
Esta es una de las iglesias góticas más bonitas de la ciudad. Fue erigida en el siglo XIV como si fuera una catedral para marineros y mercaderes con modestas contribuciones por parte de ellos. Su construcción popular ha inspirado el best seller "Los pilares de la tierra" de Ken Follett. La estructura externa es completamente perfecta: su nave central tiene 13 metros y cada una de las laterales 6'5 metros exactamente. La anchura total de la iglesia es igual a la altura de las naves laterales, y la diferencia entre estas y la central es de 6'5 metros. La fachada principal tiene un impresionante rosetón gótico del siglo XV, esculturas de San Pedro y San Pablo y dos campanarios.

I loved the outside of the church but the indoor part is even more interesting. There is an spectacular combination of light and darkness with very high vaults held by thin columns. There are very few decoration because of the destruction suffered during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) made by the anticlerical militias. The regular entrance is for the apse gate.
Me encanta el exterior de la iglesia pero el interior es aun más interesante. Hay una espectacular combinación de luces y sombras con bóvedas muy altas sustentadas por finas columnas. Hay muy poca decoración debido a la destrucción sufrida durante la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939) provocada por las milicias anticlericales. La entrada normal se hace por la puerta del ábside.

Gaudí works are absolutly wonderful and unmistakable. It's allways a pleasure to walk along the Gràcia Promenade enjoying its marvellous Modernist building. One of the most beautiful is the Batlló House, by Antonio Gaudí between 1905 and 1907. Actually this building was erected in 1875 but Gaudí made a radical renovation on it. It's know as "Casa dels ossos" (House of bones) because the first floor columns imitate bones, as well as the balconies fences. The whole façade is covered with broken coloured tiles. The roof is arched like the back of a dragon. There is a cross in a turret at the left representing the sword of St. George defeating the dragon. This building is protected by Unesco from 2005.
Las obras de Gaudí son absolutamente maravillosas e inconfundibles. Siempre es un placer dar una vuelta por el Paseo de Gracia disfrutando de sus edificios modernistas. Uno de los más bonitos es la Casa Batlló, de Antonio Gaudí, construída entre 1905 y 1907. En realidad el edificio se erigió en 1875 pero Gaudí le hizo una radical reforma. Se conoce como "Casa dels ossos" (Casa de los huesos) porque las columnas de la primera planta imitan huesos, así como las barandillas de los balcones. Toda la fachada está cubierta de azulejos rotos de colores. El techo está arqueado como si fuera la espalda de un dragón. Hay una cruz sobre un torreón a la izquierda que representa la espada de San Jorge venciendo al dragón. El edificio está protegido por la UNESCO desde 2005.

It's the most famous Gaudí's block of flats, better known as "La Pedrera" (The quarry) because of the particular building shape, which does not have any straight line. If you watch at the building from the distance you can perfectly see its stone waves, trying to be like a sand-dune. The building was commanded by the Milà's, a noble family. The original Gaudí's design had a Virgin image on the roof but finally it was canceled because of the bad social situation and Gaudí left the works. The balconies fences are made on iron following the stone shapes. The most beautiful part is the roof, with chimneys looking as pieces of sculpture as you can see in my next tip better. You can visit the ground floor for free and the roof and an aparment with charge. Currently there are offices, private housing and a bank cultural foundation. The building is protected by UNESCO.
Es el edificio de viviendas más famoso de Gaudí y de toda Barcelona, mejor conocido como "La Pedrera" (la cantera) debido a la peculiar forma que tiene, con ninguna linea recta. Si miras el edificio desde una distancia puedes ver perfectamente sus olas de piedra, intentando ser como dunas. El edificio fue encargado por los Milà, una familia noble. El diseño original de Gaudí tenía una imagen de la Virgen en el techo pero finalmente se canceló por la mala situación social de la época y Gaudí abandonó el trabajo. Las barandas de los balcones están hechas de hierro siguiendo las formas de la piedra. La parte más bonita es el techo, con chimeneas que parecen esculturas como puedes ver mejor en mi siguiente "tip". Puedes visitar la primera planta de manera gratuita, así como el techo y un apartamento pagando. Actualmente hay oficinas, viviendas privadas y la fundación cultural de una caja de ahorros. El edificio está protegido por la UNESCO

The roof is the most fascinating part, in my opinion. That's why we decided to pay the ticket and enter into the building. The chimneys have strange shapes and its covers look like medieval soldier helmets. You reach the roof from stairs covered by small structures like big ice creams! The view from the terrace roof is beautiful as well.
En mi opinión el techo es la parte más fascinante. Por eso decidimos pagar la entrada para entrar al edificio. Las chimeneas tienen extrañas formas y sus cubiertas parecen cascos de soldados medievales. Se llega al techo desde unas escaleras cubiertas por unas pequeñas estructuras con forma de gigantescos helados. La vista desde la terraza es muy bonita también.

You take an elevator when you enter in "La Pedrera" and a hostess give you an audioguide. It takes you to the attic when you start your visit to "Gaudí space", an exhibition where the different Gaudí's works are shown. It's very interesting and it worth all the time the audioguide is running, which explains you the Gaudí motivations, his technics, his contemporary time and a lot of curiosities. This attic was concibed as an air camera to avoid the warm in summer and the cold in winter. They explain you that the building has two big patios in order to avoid the ugly traditional small patios. Those one in la Pedrera are like outside façades.
Cuando entras en la Pedrera tomas un ascensor una vez que una azafata te da una audioguía. Este te lleva al ático donde comienzas tu visita al "Espacio Gaudí", una exposición donde se muestran las diferentes obras de Gaudí. Es muy interesante y merece la pena tomar todo el tiempo que dura la audioguía, que explica las motivaciones de Gaudí, sus técnicas, su tiempo contemporaneo y muchas curiosidades. Este ático se concibió somo unacámara de aire para evitar el calor del verano y el frio del invierno. Aquí explican que el edificio tiene dos grandes patios para evitar los pequeños y feos patios tradicionales. Aquellos de la Pedrera son como fachadas exteriores.

There is a flat opened to the public where there are original furnitures from the begining of the 20th Century. It shows the way of live of a wealthy family in this building with the living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, study and servant's room. Some of the furnitures were designed by Gaudí as well.
Hay un piso abierto al público con muebles originales de principios del siglo XX. Muestra la manera de vivir de una familia acomodada en este edificio con el salón, los dormitorios, los cuartos de baño, el despacho y el cuarto de la sirvienta. Algunos de los muebles son diseñados por Gaudí.

The origins of the Barcelona Cathedral are very old. The current building was constructed during the 13th to 15th centuries on top of a former Visigothic church, destructed during the Muslim occupation. Its a Gothic style temple as well as its façade, in spite of it was erected in the XIX century. Unfortunaly it was covered by scaffolding during our visit. The Cathedral is devoted to Saint Eulalia, patron saint of the city. She was a young virgin who suffered martyrdom during Roman times in Barcelona. The Cathedral is also know as "La Seu"
Los orígenes de la Catedral de Barcelona son muy antiguos. El actual edificio fue construido durante los siglos XIII al XV sobre un anterior templo visigodo, destruido durante la ocupación musulmana. Es una iglesia de estilo gótico, así como su fachada, a pesar de haber sido erigida en el siglo XIX. Lamentablemente esta se encontraba cubierta por andamiod cuando estuvimos allí. La Catedral está bajo la advocación de Santa Eulalia, patrona de la ciudad, una joven virgen martirizada en tiempos de los romanos en Barcelona. La Catedral se conoce también como "La Seo"

There are a lot of beautiful places inside the Cathedral. The most wonderful could be the choir with its carved and polycromed chairs. This area is dividing the central nave, as in the most of Spanish cathedrals. The crypt of Saint Eulalia is under the high altar, where the patron saint is buried. The Pope John Paul II prayed here in 1982. There are a lot of nice chapels next to the walls and in the ambulatory which worth a visit. There is a secluded Gothic cloister where thirteen white geese are kept because it is said that Saint Eulalia was 13 of them when she was murdered. There is a fountain in it, devoted to Saint George, patron saint of Catalonia and Aragon.
Hay muchos lugares bonitos dentro de la catedral. La más impresionante de todas ellas puede ser el coro con su sillería esculpida y policromada. Esta zona divide la nave central, como en la mayoría de las catedrales españolas. La cripta de Santa Eulalia está bajo el altar mayor, donde está enterrada la patrona. El Papa Juan Pablo II rezó aquí en 1982. Hay muchas capillas junto a los muros y en la girola que merecen una visita. También hay un claustro gótico apartado del edificio donde se cuida a 13 gansos porque se dice que Santa Eulalia tenía 13 de ellos cuando fue asesinada. En él hay una fuente dedicada a San Jorge, patrón de Cataluña y Aragón.
