Rack Railway - Tren Cremallera

Once you arrive to Monistrol de Montserrat station you must wait for the next train, which is usually waiting for people coming form Barcelona. It's a rank railway because it must climb a very high mountain and it needs a special support. I can absolutly recommend you this option. They are very comfortable trains and you'll enjoy a wonderful view of the mountains scenary during the 15 minutes ride. It has services to and from the Sanctuary every 20 minutes.

Train from Barcelona - Tren desde Barcelona

Getting to Montserrat from Barcelona is very easy. In Barcelona there are two train companies: RENFE (working in all Spain) and FGC (just in Catalonia). This company is the one which goes to Montserrat from the Square of Spain (Plaça d'Espanya) in Barcelona. Once you arrive to the departure station you can buy a ticket including the trip to Monistrol de Montserrat (the village where the Sanctuary is), the cable car or the rack rail way to get to the Sanctuary, the funiculars and the entrance to the audiovisual area and the museum. The line you must use is the R5, direction to Manresa, and your stop is Monistrol de Montserrat, if you chose the rank rail way, or Montserrat-Aeri if you prefered the cable car. The journey takes around 45 minutes.
