Hills of Úbeda with olive trees - Cerros de Úbeda

Hills and olive trees - Cerros y olivos

Encircling the city of Úbeda there are lots of olive trees, and of course, the famous "cerros de Úbeda" (hills of Úbeda). There is a Spanish saying which could be translated as: "Don´t go to the hills of Úbeda!", when somebody speaks about something that is out of the real question, when there is no connection between the matter which is supposed to be explained and the fact a person is actually answering. The origin of such an saying is very old. During the conquest of the city by the King Ferdinand III in the 13th century one of his Captains disappeared and he didn't join the battle. When it was finished he came to the city explained he got lost "in the hills of Úbeda". It was considered a cowardly affaire.

St. Paul Parish comes from the 14th century, but the current building itself was built at the 16th century. The main gate is Gothic and it's decorated with sculptures about the Virgin's Coronation. There are lot of smalls chapels inside the church. This building was used as a noble city council too.

He died in Úbeda, at St. Michael Monastery, and them a Oratory devoted to him was built next to this building in the 17th century. Actually he is not buried here, but in Segovia. Walls - Murallas

The walls between the East part of the city and the hills still being untouched since the Moorish ages (Middle Ages). Some gates stand there, among them there are the gate of Granada, of Saint Lucy and of the Flagstones.

Francisco de los Cobos, Chamber Secretary of the King Philip II, became a really powerful man. He commissioned the construction of a church devoted to the Savior of the World. This is the masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance private religious architecture. The church has a original style, with a rounded tower (one of the few in Spain) and lots of sculptures either inside and outside, giving a irregular outline to the building.
