    • A must do according to all Rome city guides. Personally I wouldn't have missed it if I didn't go there. Piazza Navona is chic and cosmopolitan but is well geared towards tourists and highly overpriced. We ended up paying 10 Euros for 2 cans (*repeat CANS, not even BOTTLES) of Coke.

    At Least Do This: There are plenty of bars and cafes around the square as well as a great number of artists selling their wares. It's nice to walk around to have a look, but other than that I wouldn't suggest sitting to people watch, unless you have brought your own food and drinks.
    Alternative: I much preferred Campo de Fiori which is a 3-5 minute walk south of Piazza Navona; smaller, more intimate and more down to earth.

    • Beware that your 'return to Rome by tossing a coin into the Trevi fountain' dreams may soon be cut short when your coin is plucked from the waters of the fountain by cheeky poachers with magnets on the ends of long sticks.

    At Least Do This: Try and aim for the deepest part of the fountain where they can't reach the money!
    Alternative: Throw in monopoly money?!

    • A great number of people have been stung by the gladiators and Roman soldiers outside the colosseum. When the dressed up gladiators/soldiers pose with you for a picture they then demand payment for the pose!

    At Least Do This: Take a picture from far away unless you really want that picture.
    Alternative: Go to Vegas!!! I had my photo done with 2 guys in the same outfits, although, the ancient colosseum wasn't in the background...

    • There are a number of guides around the entrance to the colosseum who poach for buisiness by offering you a guarantee of quick queue-skipping admission.

    At Least Do This: Don't be fooled by the guides who practically promise you the right to Caesar's throne! They'll do anything for their commission.
    Alternative: Despite the off-putting queue, we ventured in ourselves, only to find that we waited no more than 15 minutes and saved money by buying our own tickets.

    Don't forget to show your photo ID if you are an EU citizen under 25 - it entitles you to discounted entry!
