Helsingor the town | Kronborg in the winter-snow |
If there is one population in the world for whom Helsingor is among the top five destinations abroad it must be the Swedish. In countless numbers do they arrive to Helsingor to by supplies of alcohol and beer. And the tradesmen of Helsing?r welcome them. Extra nice offers on all kinds of Danish brew flashes the main-street. If you take a trip down the main-street of this cute little provinsial town you will therefore even in the coldest of the winter-months find something to warm yourself on. A little bit of procents. Looking over the mountains of alcohol, helsingor is a charming little town placed both beautifully and strategically on the far north-east corner of zealand |
| | Helsing?r and its place on the map When I say that Helsingor is strategically well placed it is because there at the point between Helsingor and Helsingborg (Sweden) is the smalest passage in ?resund. From Erik of Pommern in 1420's and up untill the 19th century Denmark held all the land surrounding the passages into the Eastern sea and the castle in Helsingborg became a treasure collection from taxation of the ships sailing on these passages. At the same time it was also a defence for the capital of Copenhagen if enemy-ships should enter that way in war-time. This was one of the reasons that the Dansih kings builded a castle at this place. |
Kronborg - home to Holger and Hamlet The castle is the pride of Helsingor.Even though their has been something like a castle at Helsingor ever since Erik of Pommern the resent castle was build by Frederik the 2nd in the 1570's. It became a UNESCO inheritage in the 1990's as one of four in the Danish Kingdom. - and it is surtantly worth a visit
But what Kronborg is more known for especially among English speaking people is the sentence "to be or not to be". Shakespeare's Hamlet takes place in Helsingor at the newly restored castle. And a must f you should come by Kronborg is to see a theaterplay of Hamlet. There is nothing as seeing it at the place where it "happened". And even though the Hamlet Shakespeare writes about never really existed, he surtantly comes to live at the halls of Kronborg.
Another person whom should one day according to legend come to live again is Holger Danske. In the dark catacombs under Kronborg, you will meet one very large fellow. His name is Holger Danske and he is an old hero in European tradition. He was first mention as a knight of the french Carl the Great, under the name Oger le Danois and has later got a place in Danish national tradition also giving name to a resistance group doing WW2. It is said that when Denmark one day will be in need, he will wake up from his sleep. | | | Holger Danske in the catacombs under Kronborg |
