The oldest church in the Americas!
Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 by Columbus' brother, Bartolomeo Columbus. In the old part (Zona Colonial - 'colonial zone') you can still see the governor's palace, the oldest church and hispital in the new world, and many other buildings most of which are turned into museums.
Interior of Alcazar de Colon
The best museum is the governor's plalace, Alcazar De Colon. It's a must-see. For photos see the tip here and the travelogue on the DR page.
Los Tres Ojos park
There are many monuments worth seeing, both in the old town and outside. To the nature lovers I recommend the park Los Tres Ojos to see these strange caves. There is also an aquarium, other attractions and good clubs&restaurants.
