The Town of Etropole

The town of Etropole has more than 2500 years of history. Establlished by Thracian tribe tribali in 7-6 century BC. Located on an important crossway from Danube river to Macedonia and Trace used by Philip II of Macedon (339 BC) and Alexander the Great (335 BC), celtic tribes and roman legions. Its location determnies its significance in the beginning as a border and road protection and later as a trade centre. In the 16th-17th century it became an important mining and handcraft centre. The mining industry became very prosperous when in 16th century celtic tribes established in the town introduced a new techniques.
During the Ottoman rule it has a special status which gave it significant independance.
The town started to decline when the town masters a path for the Ottoman troops to be built.

In 16-17th century in the Etropole monastery was established an important literary and calligraphic centre.
