|  | Some History Notes Originally a Thracian settlement named Menebria which became a Greek colony - Messembria in the 6th century BC, then fell down under Roman rule in 71BC. Later it was a subject of battles between Bulgarians and Byzantines. In 1812 after a two-week siege it was captured by the Bulgarian Khan Krum. When Bulgaria fell down under the rule of the Ottoman turks it was captured by them. |
