I See You

California gray whale spyhopping
Are we watching them, or are they watching us? To be so close and interact with these giant creatures is an amazing experience. We were in a small fishing boat and just kinda floated in the lagoon waiting for these curious animals to come up and check us out. You can even sometimes see the cows seemingly pushing their calves closer to us.
Shower, anyone?

Thar she blows

The whales get close enough that you'll be sprayed with whale snot when they surface and exhale.

Come here, big guy

Did I tell you they get really close? One of the women from our group was able to touch the whale when it swam alongside the boat. Whales that are curious enough to come up to the boat are referred to as friendlies. This one was semi-friendly. She came right next to our boat but did not linger.

The white spots on their backs are barnacles and someone had mentioned that they could also be sea lice. Eeewh. Still very cool though, to interact with these leviathans in the wild on their own terms. Definitely not a Sea World experience.
Time for a back scratch

In A Nutshell:"10 peso tacos, camping on the beach, hanging out with whales--heaven is just south of the border."
