The neo-gothic Saint Lambertuskerk (kerk = church) was designed by the famous Dutch 19th century architect PJH Kuipers and built between 1858 and 1863. Kuipers also designed the Amsterdam central station and the Rijksmuseum.

Directions: You can't miss it, the church is by far the highest building in Veghel.

Veghel is situated along the "Zuid Willemsvaart", an artificial channel dug in the first half of the nineteenth century. Close the Veghel's center, there is a harbour that is being developed into a tourist attraction. Developments take several years, but the area is already pretty attractive in summer time when small ships make an overnight stop and many people are sitting outside on the deks. Onshore, there are two bars with terraces.

The oldest house is situated on the central market square close to the church and right opposite the post office. It was completed renovated in 2005 and 2006. Actually, only the facade remains.

Klondike was the headquarter of USA's Colonel Howard Johnson (101st Airborne Division) in Operation Market Guarden in World War II. The villa is currently being used by Catholic nuns.

The former town hall is situated prominently on the south end of the central market square. Its style is typical neo-classical. Built in the 19th century, the town hall was in use as such until the nineteeneigties. It is currently being used as public library and tourist office.

The home of the vicar of Veghel is situated next to the Saint Lambertus church. It is a monumental building typical for the days that the vicar was the most important person in the village. It is still the home of today´s vicar.

The An nour mosque was built in 1994. An nour means `the light`. The mosque is used by people from Morocco that live in Veghel. Their number is currently about 550.

Mosque Selimiye is situated in a former Christian building next to the Saint Lambertus church. I am not sure, but I think it is the Turkish mosque (whereas An nour is the Morroccan mosque).

The Airborne monument (1959) remembers the soldiers of the 101st division that liberated Veghel from the Germans in World War II (operation Market Guarden).

The river Aa flows through the heart of Veghel. It is a small river that starts a bit southeast of Eindhoven and ends up in the river Maas near 's-Hertogenbosch. In the early days, the river was used for transportation. Nowadays, it is used for canoe. Several companies rent canoes and organise transport (e.g. www.mastworp.nl and www.degraal.nl).
