"The biggest European ski area south of... " a Roccaraso Travel Page by Veghel

Almost unknown outside Italy, Roccaraso is the biggest European ski area south of the Alps. I've been there twice and the resort is absolutely marvellous if you consider its location and altitude.
Roccaraso is situated about 200 km east of Rome and 120 km north of Napels. There are about 100 km of runs all connected together and served by modern chair lifts and gondolas. Despite its relatively low altitude (1400 - 2100 m), there is enough snow from mid December until early April, thanks to the Mediaterranean sea which is closeby and all around. It guarantees fresh snow at any wind direction.

This view was made in front of hotel Trieste, overlooking the very ski area just outside the town. The main ski area (Monte Pratello, Aremogna and Pizzalto) are a few kilometers outside the village.

At night, Roccaraso is quite busy until the shops close at 9 or 10 p.m.. There is no lively après-ski in the way we know it from the Alps. Instead, people take much time for dinner, stay in the bar or lounge afterwards (with their whole family) or go out for a walk to show their fur coats or jewellery.
