Bagamoyo -- 30,000 inhabitants, two hours north of Dar es Salaam -- is the oldest town in Tanzania. It was founded by the end of the eighteenth century. It was the capital of German East Africa and one of the most important trading ports along the East African coast. Bagamoyo is a world heritage site. Bagamoyo has beautiful sand beaches with palm trees. There are many tourist hotels. If you consider visiting Bagamoyo, I recommend that you don't stay for more than a few days (unless you want to study the day-to-day life of Tanzanians). Most of the monuments are in a bad condition, and you can all visit them in one day. Furthermore, there is not much you can do except for sunbathing, swimming and snorkling. |
