A Peninsula between Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour, this land was ideal for sheltering the galleons. When the Knights of Malta arrived in Malta in 1530 they settled in Vittoriosa as it was already inhabitat by the Arabs. They always planned to built their fortresses and quarters in Valletta but they never had the time as they were frequantly attacked by the Turkish Army. Just after the Great Seige in 1565, Grand Master Jean Parisotte de LaVallette, commenced the task. Francesco Laparelli was sent by Pope Pius V to plan the Bastions and fortresses around the city. 9000 workers did their best and Valletta was completed in just 5 Years. |
| | Sadly LaVallete died before the New City was completed. In 1571, Grand Master Piero del Monte moved officially to Valletta from Vittoriosa. The main areas were inhabited by the Knights while the outer areas were sold to the Natives to build their homes. As mentioned before, the engineers had made a good job in planning this city. A masterpiece in the richness of it's Baroque buildings. Today Valletta is a World Heritage City. |
