Windtower Central

With its winding lanes, windtowers and mudbrick old town, Yazd is one of the true highlights of any trip to Iran. It boasts the oldest and inhabited city in the country. It is home to Iran's largest community of Zoroastrians. The combination of an ancient desert city and a multireligious heritage gives Yazd its special relaxed atmosphere. Yazd is very hot in the summer and the weather can be oppressing but that doest ruin the mood of the town. Yazd is famous for its windtowers designed to catch and circulate the wind which dominate the city's skyline.

With its windtowers poking out of a baked brown labyrithth of lanes, the old city of Yazd emerges out of the vast desert like no other place. Yazd's old city of one of the oldest cities on earth and it is a perfect place to get a feel for the region's history. Just about everything about in the old city is made of mud and the resulting brown skyline is dominated by the "badgirs" or windtowers. The city is a great place to get lost and you'll doubtless discover courtyards, wooden doors and great architecture. You will be lead by countless children who will lead you out of the maze of Yazd. Any summer visitor to Yazd can hardly fail to appreicate the need for cool air in an area where the day time temps reach 45 degrees. These ancient systems of natural air conditioning, which can be seen in the town and villages of the Persian Gulf Coast, are designed to give relief from the scorching sun. Overall, Yazd is one of my favorites places in the entire region and 3 days in this city passed without a moment's notice. A great place to relax and enjoy the local hospatality.
