"Great Guana Cay" Guana Cay by JohnniOmani
Guana Cay Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 6 photos
Great Guana Cay or locally known as Guana is a 6 mile long cay north of Marsh Harbour. The island is less developed than the other cays but that is one of it attractions in my book. The small fishing village is traditional and a great place to get away from it all. The cay has a 5 mile incredible beach with aqua green waves and soft white sand. The waves crash against some of the rocks in the beachs center but walk in either direction and chances are you will have the gorgeous beach all to yourself. The snorkelling is amazing and come prepared to see all kinds of marine life. On another note, the locals are proud of their cay and they are currently go head to head with officals that plan on building a golf course resort nearby so you will see all kinds of signs around town that say things like ''Bakers Bay folk not welcome'' and I can understand their frustration. All too often large companies or resorts invade these lasting cays and damage the environment but the people are friendly to foreigners regardless but just note it is a hot topic on the island. After you finish snorkelling or swimming, you can relax in some of the islands local pubs. They have great locations and you hang out and pass the day while taking in the beautiful views. Guana Cay is an excellent day trip and a quiet place to get away from it all. Good stuff.
Guana Cays beach is fantastic and if you are lucky enough to visit in the off season ie not Chrismtas or during spring break then you will be rewarded with a beach all to yourself. You can rent some snorkelling gear from nearby shops so just ask around starting at Nippers (they are helpful). The water is warm year round and sometimes the waves are strong making surfing a potential activity if you come prepared with a board. The beach fills up on Sundays due to Nippers big pig roast party so visit outside of Sunday and you will love it :)
