Ilha Grande lives up to its reputation as a tropical paradise. Ilha Grande is a fabulous pristine island that has gorgeous beaches, secluded bays and amazing jungles and waterfalls. Prior to the Portuguese, Indians inhabited the island and later Pirates used the island as a lair to escape capture. The island was then used as a prison but was eventually destroyed in the 1990s. Vila do Abraao is the main village and the starting point for many travellers. Praia Lopes Mendes (the world famous beach) is nearby and the Blue Lagoon demands time as well. Schooner tours, kayaking, snorkelling, jungle treks and samba parties make this tropical South Atlantic Island one of the most relaxing funky places in the Western Hemisphere.
