Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan, and it is in the northwest of the country. During the 50s the administration of Pakistani President Ayub Khan, changed this city to the permanent capital. Rawalpindi was designated as the temporary capital. Work on the new capital began during the 1960s. My initial impression of Islamabad was how moder and posh it was everywhere. You can basically get anything you want in the diplomatic areas and the city feels like it has no heart. It is a modern city that lacks history and tradition in comparison with Rawalpindi. Islamabad lacks tourist sights but is worth a few days. |
| | Lok Vira Museum Beyond the wonderfully built entrance is a first class ethnographic museum whose display includes traditional handicrafts and a great overall history of the area. The best of these are the embroidered costumes, jewellery and woodcarvings. The reference library has resources on history, art, crafts, traditional music and ethnography. The museum is massive and it covers the history of Pakistan dating back 1000s of years. Pervez Musharraf inaugurated the museum in 2004 and although it is $5 US entrance fee , the museum is clean, easy to follow and gives a detailed and fascinating history of the country. |
