Absinthe: Feel the Burn of Absinthe

  • The Czech Republic is the only country still producing absinthe, so when you visit it is a must. It isn't the strongest alcohol made (that would be everclear), but it is up there at 70% alchohol by volume. It is an odd green color, but doesn't really taste much. You mainly feel a burn when you swallow. Be sure to have it the traditional way by burning a spoon full of sugar and mixing it in. Have a local show you how.

    Beer!: The Original Pilsner

  • Pilsner Urquell is touted as the original pilsner, but there are many other varieties to try. One brand that seems to be of a bit better quality is Gambrinus. Pilsner Urquell is available everywhere, even McDonald's , but you'll find the others in most pubs and on the streets. Something else of note: the original Budweiser was started in Czech Republic, but the Americans stole the name. The "real" Budweiser is a bit darker and better in my opinion. And don't forget, it's legal to walk on the streets with alcoholic beverages.

Local Customs: Money in the dish please!

  • In Prague, it is common practice to put your money when paying in a little dish type object that is sitting on the counter. You rarely place money directly into a persons hands. I have seen this practice in other European countries, but never in the US. Just something to be aware of!
