I didn't spend much time in Pisa; I wish I could have, but we were on a pretty tight schedule. So, our only stop was the Campo dei Miracoli - Field of Miracles (actually northwest of the city center) - the baptistery, the duomo, and the campanile (otherwise known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa) - the cemetery was closed to tourists while we were there. I was very much impressed with these three buildings (has anyone else noticed that buildings in religious places seem to come in threes in Italy?) - especially with their impressive history. I always wondered why Pisa had such magnificent religious buildings and learned my answer while there - at the time of their erection, the city of Pisa had a powerful navy and was a very important port. Since the city was quite wealthy, the buildings reflected that. Yet another mystery to me solved by my travels! |
