It is virtually impossible to be in Kota Kinabalu without visiting Sabah's most spectacular natural wonder - the Kinabalu Mountain. Less than two hours from Kota Kinabalu, the 4,000 m high mountain is surrounded by a National Park that has been listed in the Unesco's world heritage list since the year 2000.
The unique eco-system of the mountain offers a rare view of the fauna and flora of Borneo. Look closely and you might see the giant Rafflesia, the world's largest flower and some 1,500 different species of orchids that scientists found in the park. Over 500 different species of birds, numerous small mammals and reptiles were also part of the discovery.
Trekking to the top of the mountain can be organized, though some experience in climbing is required. Tour operators organize trekking to the rather arid summit of the Mount. Once in the park, lodging is available.
