Only the desert has a fascination To ride alone In the sun in the forever unpossessed country Away from man. This is the great temptation. DH Lawrence* |
A Short Insight Namibia gained it's independence from South Africa in 1990 and is becoming a more and more popular destination for tourists, fortunately at present this does seem to be in a controlled manner, making it an unspoiled and natural beauty spot on the world map.
There are about 1.8 million Namibians and 11 Ethnic groups. A mix of fishermen, herders, hunter gatherers, farmers, traders and white settlers.
English and Afrikaans are spoken throughout the country as well as more local languages too.
On leaving Windhoek, you can head towards the Kalahari desert in the East where the Bushman have lived for century's, they are also the oldest inhabitants of Namibia.
You may decide to take the direction of the Namib Desert in the West, with it's wonderous sand dunes that do in fact buzz beneath the surface with life along with the animals that roam over them. This is due to the fog that each night rolls in from the cold Atlantic Ocean, providing moisture to the plants and animals that occupy this barren region.
Namibia is nearly four times the size of the UK, it is vast and needs time to be enjoyed fully. |
