LONDINIUM - to call it by it's Roman Name London was the largest town in Roman Britain (the area within the Roman walls we are speaking of)
London is approximately 2000 years old and was created by the Romans in the first century AD. The area they settled in is the area now referred to as the City of London. Originally it was merely a settlement that occupied a simple bridge over the River Thames, within 100 years it was to become a bustling city of 30,000 people.
Londinium was regarded as a frontier town, unsophisticated and perching on the very edge of the Roman Empire, a long way from Rome itself. However over the past recent years, with all the redevelopment that has been taking place in present day London, archeologists have been able to piece together information about the Roman city beneath todays modern streets and buildings. This has brought to light the fact that far from being unsophisticated, Londinium was in fact one of the most sophisticated and advanced cities of the entire Roman Empire. |
