Deception Pass History

"In the spring of 1792, Joseph Whidbey, master of HMS Discovery and Captain Vancouver's chief navigator, sailed through the narrow passage that is now called Deception Pass and proved that it was not really a small bay as charted by the Spaniards, but a deep and turbulent channel that connects the Strait of Juan de Fuca with the Saratoga Passage," which runs between the mainland and Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands.
The Deception Pass Bridge connects Fidalgo Island to the north with Whidbey Island to the south. The road is about 180 feet above the channel. The bridge was dedicated the last day of July 1935.
The state park is just south of the bridge and covers the northwest portion of Whidbey Island.
The park has giant old-growth forests, 3 lakes, includes 19 miles of the island's shoreline. Year-round tent and RV camping are available with 320 campsites. Ocean and lake fishing are offered, as well as scuba-diving. Lots of cruises are scheduled locally, too.

Deception Pass Bridge

A very popular two-lane bridge connecting Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands.
One of our favorite family outings, when we lived in Marysville, was to drive up I-5 then across to Fidalgo Island, south the length of Whidbey Island, then take the Mulkilteo Ferry across the Bay to Everett and back home.
It was even prettier when the tulip fields were in bloom.

Still a commercial waterway.

Besides the whale-watching and dinner cruises offered by local concerns, commercial fishermen and loggers continue to rely on the passage.

Pros and Cons

  • Cons:I can't think of any. Can YOU think of any?
  • In a nutshell:State's most popular park for a reason!
