Kalam

Nov 2004

Kalam is located at an altitude of approximately 6800 feet. It is approximately 225kms from Islamabad.

Kalam Kohistan is the name given to the northern-most parts of the Swat district in the North-
West Frontier Province, including Kalam and the areas beyond Kalam. To the North it is
bordered by the mountains of Chitral and the Gilgit Agency. To the East, several high mountain
passes lead into the Kandia valley of Indus Kohistan. Frequently-travelled mountain passes also
connect to the West, to the villages of Thal and Lamuti in Dir Kohistan. Kalam is the name of a
village located at the confluence of the Ushu and Utrot rivers, which form the river Swat. The
Kalam Kohistani people occupy most of the upper-most parts of the Swat valley.

Kalam village is located at an altitude of approximately 7,000 feet above sea level. The scenery
in Kalam is dominated by the glaciers of the nearby Mankial range, east of Kalam, and by the
more distant peak of the Falakser. The peaks of Mankial and Falakser reach an altitude of just
under 20,000 feet.

The panoramic views are simply breath taking. The forest en route to Ushu is simply unbelievable, one must stop here and camp if possible. The road meanders through the forest all the way to Ushu glacier, beyond which lies lake Mahodand (30kms from Kalam) on a jeep track. Kondol lake (19kms from Kalam) is also accessible via another jeep track.

Roads in Swat valley are not that great. Especially the road from Bahrain to Kalam which does not deserve to be called a road.

Lately, as of Nov 04, the local government had started repairing the roads so I expect them to be much better by now.
