"BERANE" Berane by Berane

Berane is the small town on the north-east of the Republic of Montenegro.
It is situated on both banks of the mountain river Lim witch has its headwater in Plav’s lake. It was founded in 1863 by Turkish conquerors, first on the right bank of the river Lim and later it developed on the other bank too.
First, Turks made military fortresses and residents for soldiers only, but later the town developed more and more every day. Two men of that time were particularly responsible for the look of the town: Rizvan bay Jajcanin and Tahir pasha. The former has studied the architecture in Paris so he designed the main street as a French boulevard. It’s very wide with trees on both sides. The later designed the look of the houses. Trade and manufacturing flourished. There were many shoe makers, tailors, blacksmiths, arm makers etc. More and more people have been coming to live in this town. <p>
Turks left our country in 1912 but many Serbs were Islamized so there are two religions in our town: Orthodox and Muslims.
Only two years later in 1914 the First World War started so our people had very hard time, and the look of our town remained almost the same until the end of the Second World War when the industry flourished and changed its look with many factories and buildings.
