This section of the rampart of the old wall faces Pest. It is located above the fisherman’s village of olden times and a fish market was still being regulary held beside the church in the 1830s- hence the name of the bastion. Near the Matthias Church, the arcades of the Fishermans Bastion are spectacular background for the large equestrian statue of St. Stefan.
The building is 268 m long and covers an area of nearly 18.000 m2 and was completed by 1906. The layout, the arrengement and linkage of space are Baroque in nature, but the architecture is neogothic. The exterior is decorated by 88 statues. The main facade overlooks the Danube.

Recently they begun to announce through a loudspeaker if there is a ticket "razzia" atop of METRO escalator - in Hungarian only. It is not the goal, but HUNGARIANS who have no ticket now have a chance to escape. :-)
