Leaning Tower | I can't quite hold it up! |
Pisa is just a short train ride out of Florence. About an hour and a half away. The reason why I wanted to go there was to see the famed leaning tower. When you arrive at the train station in Pisa, it's quite puzzling as to where the tower is, but if you stare at the town map briefly, and head out about 20 minutes walk towards the opposite edge of the town, it will suddenly appear! The tower has attracted many visitors over the centuries, including Galileo, who conducted experiments on falling objects here. There have been many attempts to reduce the towers tilt, but because it was built on a sandy silt subsoil, the foundation upon which it was built is weak, I believe the tower will most probably always retain a slight lean as long as it remains standing. There are two other buildings constructed near the tower: the Duomo and the Bapistry(which are also very interesting and beautiful in architecture) nearby. Of course, there are all kinds of souvenir stands set up next to these architechtural wonders. so be aware that there is great probability that you will be sucked into buying a bunch of stuff with the word PISA on it. It's soo funny, me and my friend spent about an hour snapping pictures, when I noticed a man posing in an awkward position. He inspired me to take this picture. |
| | trying to find the tower. It was very hot here during the summertime. I traded my shoes in for flip flops while I was here. While walking from the train station (what seemed like a long walk) towards the tower, I was very surprised to see so many bicycles and mopeds everywhere. It was quite an interesting sight compared to what I am accustomed to back home. |
One of two buildings constructed near the tower. This one is known as the Bapistry. The second building, Duomo. | | |
