Slovenia's cosmopolite capital | Lively Cankarjevo Nabrezje on a sunny day |
With the exception of a single colleague, everybody at work was wondering how the heck I chose Ljubljana as a holiday destination. Slovenia is not the typical holiday destination for the average inhabitant of northern Germany, but it has a growing popularity. Unfortunately, the iron curtain is somehow still present in many heads so that most westerners do not visit eastern Europe, perhaps with the exception of Prague, Budapest and a handful of typical beach destinations in Croatia and Bulgaria. Ljubljana would be a big surprise for them. Even though I informed myself quite well, I did not expect this city to be so open towards its visitors and towards Europe. Slovenia's capital has a young population with a high percentage of students. Most of them are fluent in English and the attitude towards Europe and the European Union can be described as more than positive. The friendliness of its inhabitants is known beyond the borders of the country - how else does it come that there is an own catergory for "friendly people" among the VT pages? Impressions that I shared with the european and overseas travellers I met at my hostel. |
| | What to see in Ljubljana Ljubljana has a beautiful old town which also offers an interesting choice of bars and cafés. Close to the old town, you will find the castle of Ljubljana on a hill overlooking the town.
If you like the architecture of the late 19th / early 20th century with its neo-renaissance and art nouveau styles, you will find a couple of nice buildings and bridges. The museums are not outstanding, but still nice to see.
Tivoli Park is the largest green area in the town and has a couple of interesting places to visit. Popular daytrips destinations like Bled and Postojna are easily reached by bus.
With around 270 000 inhabitants, Ljubljana is one of the smallest european capitals. The public transport system is good, but you can also walk to most attractions without getting tired.
