About the german Umlaut in N?rnberg | Nuernberg seen from the castle |
I have no idea, how you found this page and if you’ll ever find it again. Unfortunately, VT’s search engine is not able to take a decent “ü” (u umlaut). But the city’ isn’t found under its english name Nuremberg either. Type Nuernberg (in the german language, u umlaut is changed to ue, if “ü” is not available) to find it on VT. Please excuse, if I change between Nürnberg, Nuernberg. Nuremberg, NUE or whatever. While writing these pages, I am getting confused about the real name of the city… |

| | Why Nuernberg? Many people can’t resist, when they see a special offer. For some, it’s kitty litter for 2,99 EUR, for me it’s any airline giving away flights for some pennies. When Air Berlin offered a couple of domestic flights for an euro in May of 2007, I booked a daytrip to Nürnberg for August. The first flight left Hamburg at 6:30 in the morning, arriving in Hamburg at half past nine in the evening. Somehow, I am not very lucky when it comes to picking the right day for such a trip. I picked the chilliest day in August of 2007 for my day in Nürnberg. |
| | Nürnberg is the largest german town with a well-kept medieval defense wall. It had a troublesome history, being favoured by emperors of the holy roman empire, but also by nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. The Golden Bull of 1356, the first civil law codex in Germany, was issued here by emperor Charles IV. The nazis issued their discriminating Nuernberg laws in the city with the same name. Later, the Nuernberg trials marked one of the most important steps in coming to terms with the crimes of the nazi dictatorship. Today, Nuernberg is one of Germany’s largest cities with a population of around 500 000 inhabitants. It is the second largest city, after Munich, in the state of Bavaria. Anyway, you should not point out to the people in Nuernberg that they are bavarians. They consider themselves to be franconians. Franconia (Franken) is an old german region which is in the northern part of the state of Bavaria and in the southwestern part of the state of Thuringia. |
