The Nieuwe Kerk is surely the most famous church in Amsterdam. It was built by Jacob van Campen (who also built the old town hall, now royal palace) after the former building burnt down in 1645. The most interesting pieces are the tomb of the famous naval hero Michel de Ruyter and a 17th century wooden pulpit. The church is used for the coronation ceremonies of the dutch queens and kings and it was also the church where the wedding between Prins Willem Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta took place. It also houses art expositions from time to time (The plants you see on the picture were only there because of an exposition about art and nature).

This monument was built in 1956 after the second world war. It is a 22 m high obelisk constructed by J.J.P. Oud. Today, it is a central meeting point and many people use the step to take a break. You can see street artists around the place, but also drug dealers. Anyway, the drug dealers should be no problem. Just tell them that you are not interested and enjoy a few minutes of break in the dynamic life of Amsterdam.

The royal palace was built as a town hall in 1648 by Jacob van Campen (who also built the Nieuwe Kerk). Van Campen was not happy with the way the building was completed and was absent at the inauguration ceremony. When Napoleon Bonaparte conquered the Netherlands in 1808, the town hall served as a palace for his brother Louis who installed himself as "King of Holland". However, when William I. became king of the Netherlands, he gave the palace back to the city, but it remained a palace for the royal family. It is not used for living, but for representative purposes. Visitors can see most parts of the palace for only 4,50 EUR (6,50 with useful audio guide). Many rooms are still preserved in the same way Louis Bonaparte left them. Definitively worth a visit!

They include for exaple these refurbished building (Nr. 187 - 195) and seven warehouses (Nr. 681 - 693) constructed around 1715, each named after one of the seven provices which formed the Republic of united Netherlands.

The "Scheepvaartmuseum" houses a large exhibition about the importance of ships and sea trade for Amsterdam and the Netherlands. A psecial part of the exhibition is the "Amsterdam" a replica of an East Indiaman, the type of ship used by the V.O.C. You can explore the structure and chambers of the ship and sometimes you can even meet some actors dressed like original crew members.

Magna Plaza is a modern, luxurious shopping center, installed in this former post building in 1992. Nice to see from outside and if you have enough money, you can also spend some time inside.

Probably, this is Amsterdam's most famous drawbridge. A legend says that it was built by two sisters who wanted to visit each otherfor morning coffee. It was build in 1672 and replaced several times. The current one is from 1969. Come by when it's dark. Then the Magere Brug is illuminated!

AgentBrittany83 Sun Jul 13, 2008 20:12 UTC Great Amsterdam page! Its one of my favorite places in Europe | Nemorino Mon Dec 10, 2007 21:11 UTC Glad you enjoyed your visits to Amsterdam, despite the weather. I know the Beurs van Berlage because there is a good bicycle rental shop in the basement. I've never been to the Maritime Museum, but it's on my list for next time. | hojasdehierba Sat Mar 4, 2006 17:14 UTC Good page! Amsterdam is one of the European cities I'd like much to visit. Vielen Danke! | Mariajoy Mon Aug 29, 2005 20:49 UTC Another great page... I have been here a few times but I see that there are still some places I haven't visited yet! |
