Eurolines bus stop - Rotterdam

Eurolines bus stop

Eurolines coaches (from/to northern Germany)

If you don’t manage to get a cheap train ticket on a special offer, this is the cheapest alternative to travel from northern Germany to Randstad Holland and back. Coaches run at least six times a week, with at least three of them being overnight coaches. That means that the coach leaves late in the evening and arrives at your destination on the next morning. You don’t just save the accomodation costs, but you save a whole day! The disadvantage is that the coach stops a lot during the journey between Rotterdam and Hamburg: Den Haag, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Bremen. Add an additional stop for the obligatory passport control. It’s not the most comfortable way to travel, mut depending on time and money, you may consider this option.

Right now (2006), there are still construction works going on around the central train station. Until these are finished, the coach will stop at Kruisplein (just a few meters away from the big hole in front of the train station). Look for stop number 15.

bus and tram - Rotterdam

bus and tram

Getting around - or how to use the strippenkaart

Rotterdam has an excellent public transport system consisting of a large tram and bus network as well as two metro lines. However, it is possible to reach most of the sights without using them. Just rent a bike (for example at the use-it desk near the coach station) or have a walk. But beware of the trams, especially when you use a bike. The trams seem to appear from nowhere sometimes :).
If you want to use the public transport, buy a strippenkaart. It seems like an own science how to use them, but it's easy. Just stamp one stripe for each zone you enter plus one extra stripe. You can buy 2- or 3-stripe-cards on board of busses and trams, but it is more economic to buy 15-stripe-cards in advance. It is no problem, if you don't know the number of zones you are travelling through. Most drivers are very friendly and will help you. The best advantage of the strippenkaart: You can use it in any city of the Netherlands!
