"The town which ga ..." a Stansted Mountfitchet Travel Page by Airpunk

The name of Stansted is associated with one of the largest and fastest growing airports in Britain. Unfortunately, not everybody in Stansted Mountfitchet is that happy with the airport, especially with plans to build a second runway which will increase air as well as road and rail traffic. This small town, situated northwest of the airport, is more proud of its history than of its low-cost airport:

Stansted means "stony place" in Saxon and this settling was founded well before the Norman Invasion. In 1066, Baron Mountfitchet, a Norman, settled down and began with the construction of a castle. One of his descendandts took part in forcing King John I. to sign the Magna Carta in 1215, which made the King recounce to some of its rights. The castle is now the main tourist attractions of the town (if you don't count the airport...), but there are also some other nice places to be seen.
