Hämeenlinna Travel Guide: 37 reviews and 81 photos

Easily accessible from both, Tampere and Helsinki, Hämeenlinna is a good day trip destination. With only around 45000 inhabitants, the city is not really big - not even by Finnish standards. However, it has a long history and a castle with excellent exhibitions inside. Beside the castle, there are a handful of nice places to see, but with exception of the castle, none of them would be – in my opinion - reason enough to make a detour. These sights include the church, Sibelius' birthhouse, the historical museum, the art museum and the artillery museum. Makes a good daytrip destination, but unless you have a good reason, it should not be the focus point of your Finland trip.

The area around present-day Hämeenlinna has been settled since the Iron Ages and developed into a trading point for the Vikings. With the construction of the castle in the 13th century, the Swedish fortified their rule in the area. When Hämeenlinna received city rights in 1639, the town was still located north of the castle. Little remains of that original Hämeenlinna which was moved to the south of the Castle in 1777. The 19th century saw the opening of Finland's first railway line between Hämeenlinna.
