Thailand. Home Away From Home

The boss and I at Sukhothai
Sukhothai is one of the most visually exciting places I have ever visited! But don’t go in July, as we did. It was unbelievable hot, perhaps close to 100 F. We hired a driver and van in Chiang Mai, made the 4 hour drive in comfort, and the entire trip cost something less than $75. Perhaps a bit expensive, but we would have never found it on our own (an amazing lack of directional signs). You can rent a bike or take a small train, but it is also permitted to drive, which seemed the best option to me. Perhaps the true wonder of Sukhothai is to imagine it at it zenith. The central ruins are magnificent, but don’t forget to get a map and see some of the isolated areas. In particular, the Khmer style towers are wonderful. We will certainly be back again.
The best advise I can give to anyone going to Sukhothai is to buy and read every thing you can before you go. It is of great historical importance to Thailand, and a casual walk through the park would be a pity. The best book I found was Sukhothai, Its History, Culture, and Art, by Betty Gosling. Oxford University Press.
The lotus-bud stupa and other buildings at Wat Mahathat. I found it breathtaking. The Ram Khamhaeng (ram-came-hang) Museum in town is worth seeing, as is the museum shop worth a stop. We bought Sukhothai style ceramic plates, with the famous fish design. There is also a small market just outside the museum for refreshments.

Cons:"HOT, HOT, HOT"
In A Nutshell:"If you haven't been, go!"
