Legend has it that a Thai king was once having trouble getting his army to do as he wanted and so he called a meeting at this temple of the important generasls. He also hid someone behind the Buddha (it is a very small room and a very large Buddha) and at the just the right time a loud voice, seemingly coming from the Buddha, encouraged the generals to be obedient to their king. Of course they complied. Please forgive me if I have lost something in the translation from Thai to English. This is as lovely a temple as I saw at Sukhothai. Actually it is an image house or Mondop. Its name is Wat Si Chum and it shouldn’t be missed. |
| | Wat Si Sawai (15th century) is one of two Khmer style temples I saw in Sukhothai and I found it beautiful and intriguing. The buildings are a wihan or congregation hall and a prang or towers, based on the Indian prototypes.* This is a small walled compound and not to far from the central area of Wat Mahathat.

| | This is a lovely Buddha image in the late artistic period and quite different from the high classic style. The graceful and flowing image represents the height of Sukhothai’s artistic accomplishments. Wat Mahathat. |
