Nightlife Spot: Cavern Club
Welcome to the heart of the Liverpool that was most influenced by the Beatles! I'm talking about the Cavern Quarter, the area where numerous famous clubs are, among them the Cavern Club which proudly names itself the "most famous club of the world". It started as a jazz club in the late 1950s but became most popular after the Beatles had sort of started their career there on February 9th, 1961. The Cavern Club soon was the heart and soul of the Merseybeat - and became immortal when Brian Epstein discovered the Beatles there in late 1961. It was the starting shot for the most successful band of the world. Of course, the Cavern Club soon became too small for the large crowd of fans that the band attracted. So the Beatles gave their last concert in the club on August 3rd, 1963. Later that decade, the popularity of Merseybeat music had gone down. This and financial problems left the owner no choice but to close the club - which, however, was reopened later that year after a giant outcry by supporters. The Cavern Club never regained its original popularity and was closed again later because of the construction of the subway. Reopened, it became a major part of Liverpool's nightlife scene and has kept this popularity until now. Nowadays, however, most bands playing there are paying tribute to the Beatles or other 60s artists. This doesn't mean that there is bad music: When I went there, we saw a great performance of a Beatles cover band called the Mersey Beatles. It was incredible how similar their voices were to those of the original Beatles. They sang all the famous songs and the crowd went absolutely crazy - probably just like in the good old days.
Btw, it makes sense to also check out the surrounding area. There are numerous nightclubs, bars and discotheques close by.
