Warnings Or Dangers: The Brothel Quarter
  • Tip Rating:
  • When visiting Titanic Bar or Phuc Tan Bar near Song Ho River, be careful! The area is one of the poorest of Hanoi and is definitely not safe! The two bars are still worth visiting and very popular by Westerners living in Hanoi. You should especially be careful when you walk around in the area - every second person will try to get you into one of the brothels near there. Best to come by taxi or motobike and leave the place the same way. By the way, during daytime, Phuc Tan is well worth a visit if you want to get an impression of the less known parts of the city. Although poor and pretty run-down, it's interesting for those who do not have the chance to visit the surroundings of Hanoi.

    Warnings Or Dangers: Food!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hanoi - Thit Cho (dog meat) for sale

  • Food can be quite dangerous in Vietnam. As you probably all have heard, many birds suffer from a dangerous illness which is also infectious for humans. Eating chicken or ducks may be risky. The same is true for fruits - be sure to peel them and remove any parts that may be bad for your health. Drinking may be risky, too: Often the ice cubes used are made of water that has not been boiled. I was terribly sick after drinking a lemon juice with bad ice.
A different kind of "danger" is the fact that when eating in non-touristy restaurants you won't find an English menu. In case you don't like dog meat, for instance, avoid Thit Cho. Vietnamese people eat many animals that are not common in the Western cuisine, so be prepared!

Great page; I especially enjoyed your off-the-beaten path tips. I hope to see some of these villages during my trip next month. And Halong Bay - yes, it sounds like a paradise.

Thanks for the visit. Let me know if you have any questions about your upcoming trip to N.S. I enjoyed your Hanoi pages, photos and tips. I would love to go some day, if only to Halong Bay and those caves! So many places...

Thx for the interesting tips. Might be my next trip, with or without driving a Honda.
