Augsburg revisited

by King_Golo - last update: Aug 31, 2006

Fuggerei detail
Years ago, I was in Augsburg for one day - my plan was to start studying there and so I had an appointment with some professor who told me that my Abitur grades were too bad so that I couldn't start studying there. I was pretty pissed, believe me! Anyway, I give everybody (and this includes destinations) a second chance, so I revisited Augsburg this June. Friends of mine are studying there, and I paid them a visit. I must admit that my bad memories about Augsburg were gone pretty quickly. The city in Bavaria greeted me with four days of blue sky, sunshine nonstop and a number of interesting sights which I of course had not seen back then.

Augsburg was home to the Fugger family, the enormously rich tradesmen from the Renaissance. Much of this wealth can still be found in the city's appearance. Augsburg has a number of beautiful Renaissance houses, some interesting churches, and of course the Fuggerei, the world's first social housing project.

Augsburg has many narrow lanes and streets, most of which are not mentioned on internet maps. Here is one that also considers smaller streets, but apart from that it's not a really good map.

Well, yes, our two Augsburg pages are different. Still, your page is well done, too!

Nice tips on the Fuggers. I have also had some good visits to Augsburg, mainly on business but usually with enough time to see some sights or go to the opera.
