10 Reasons I love Queens

by coneyislandgreen - last update: Oct 31, 2006

I've been home in New York for 2 weeks and believe it or not have not left Queens once. I'm getting fatter with each passing meal and hotter with each passing day of this heat wave. So in 2 weeks I've found happiness at least 10 times in Queens and you should also whether it be here or anywhere.

10 Reasons why I love Queens

1. The Train - Our life line and connection to the outside boroughs. A lot of our trains are above ground giving you a panaramic view of our working class communities. It's what brings us to Shea, Astoria, Flushing, Woodside, Brooklyn and Manhatten. The train keeps us all in check. We may be different but all of us on the train have the same mission - Get to work, make money, get home.

2. Pride - we have plenty to go around. In a Borough of 2.2 million people and 500 languages and dialects you are sure to see more flags hanging out of cars, houses, and what have you then at the World Cup and thats on an average day. Queens even holds the Guiness Book of World Records for most ethnically diverse place in the world.

3.Diversity - Because of the above facts a day in the park for the kids looks like an ad for United Colors of Benetton. Speaking of Parks, we actually have trees in our borough and lawns and some of the best views in all of New York City.

4. Food - With all these people comes food. Pizza, perogie, platanos, knishes, cannoli, kielbasa, Gyro... Anything Thai, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Greek, American, Korean, Mexican... I could go on and on, hell, I had Ethiopian in Mid-town last night . And none of this is done in some pretentious, trendy Fusion, and expensive manner, it's nothing but homegrown goodness!

4. PART 2: Bagels- Not that crappy lenders junk, there made fresh and huge and loaded with cream cheese anywhere you go around here.

5. Booty - With all the food we eat brings booty. Yes, our women have curves and we're proud of it. Rubber necking is an issue here in Queens and not just on the Long Island Expressway. So many beautiful people from so many places, it makes you want to travel the world and fall in love... Or just wander your way through Queens.

6. Flirts - If you like them we got them ladies. A Queens man always lets a girl know she looks very good in those summer dresses and can be said in anyone of 7 languages.

7. Shopping - If you need anything Queens has it, if a place doesn't, I know a guy who can get it for you.

8. Ghetto Fabulous - We raid clearance racks like how a southerner eats fried chicken, we get in there and leave nothing behind. Go to Banana Republic and see how empty it is until you see clothes strewn about in the 75% off corner and a crew of women looting over it all.

9. Accents - We have the most well known accent in the world thanks to ganster films, The Ramones, Christopher Walken, Run D.M.C , Cyndie Lauper , and the infamous Archie Bunker. Ok, so they all may be a little freaky, but hey, that shows how crazy good this place has and always will be. Fashion, Music, TV, and Movies does not start with a label, the label starts here.

10. Heat - Thinking of all this makes you hot and on days like this where the heat outside is over 100 degrees Queens folk become some of the most resourceful people around and still manage to look out for each other. On a hot summer night you can hear all the good music from around the world through our windows as everyone sits on their stoop and and talks about all of the above.
