In 1962, my father accepted a job at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome, Italy, as an agronomist (soil scientist).
Even though I was only 8 years old, I remember that time like yesterday. We had moved from an experimental farm on the idyllic outskirts of Frederiction, N.B. Canada, where my siblings and I had the run of fields and forests to a penzione on a narrow street in the middle of Rome from where it was just a hop, skip and a jump to the Colosseum.
During these years in Italy, the country was in its prime, still enjoying its reputation as the home for la dolce vita .
I always make a point of throwing coins in the Trevi fountain in Rome to ensure a return to this beautiful country and I have had the good fortune of returning to Italy many times.
At first, I would return to visit all my friends that I left behind. I also returned on my honeymoon, for a friend's wedding, for the Jubilee Year and most recently, in 2004, to visit Tuscany and Venice with family and friends.
My tips will be from this most recent trip.
