"I have travelled around the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes, the Alps and the Highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all!" These remarks by Alexander Graham Bell fittingly describe the beautiful island of Cape Breton where I live. Cape Bretoners have learned to survive hard economic times but have always enjoyed their music, culture, community and the beauty of their land.
This little story may help you figure out what the people will be like where you next travel.
A stranger comes to a new town, sees an old man at the side of the road, and says, "Old man, I'm new here. Tell me about your town." The old man asks him what it was like in his last place and the stranger replies how cold the people were, that they never talked and how he couldn't wait to leave. "Alas," said the old man, "you'll find our town just like that." The next day another stranger sees the same old man at the side of the road and says, "Old man, I'm new here. Tell me about your town." Again the old man asks him what it was like in his last place, to which the second stranger replies how incredibly friendly the people were and how they went out of their way to make him feel at home. The old man then replied, "Well, you are in luck. Our town is just like that." (Author unknown)
I am convinced that one of the best age groups to travel with are 14 and 15 year olds. I've just returned from a fantastic trip to France with a group of 43. Many students in this age group are ready to start spreading their wings, distancing themselves from their parents and other adults, and putting much value on relationships with friends. However, when they travel with you to territories unknown to them, they appreciate the bits of freedom they get, but also value the knowledge and security that adults can provide. Fond memories of the trip and students will last forever.
I have a drawer that I keep adding to on a continuous basis. It contains memorabilia from Canada and the Atlantic provinces, pins, items such as tootbrushes and paste, school supplies and little toys. Whenever we or our children travel, we pick out what is appropriate for the area. The last time I travelled with my students, I used some of these items as rewards for speaking French and being all round pleasant. Even 15 year olds like these pick-me-ups. It makes them feel special.
You may notice the embroidery floss. This is for malking friendship bracelets.
