A very good Holiday Inn but is too far out of town to be able to walk into Colchester which is some 4 miles away or a twelve pound each way taxi ride. A vehicle is therefore essential which in itself can create a parking problem when in the town centre. If visiting the town, then possibly a more central hotel is the best bet where you dont need a vehicle as unless you are a local, car parking can be a problem in Colchester
Unique Qualities: Serves very good food at reasonable prices and worth booking a dinner there whether a resident or not, to get your own overall impresssion of the hotel. There is an adequate free car park attached by the side of this hotel
Address: Abbotts Lane Eight Ash Green, Colchester, Essex CO
Comparison: about average

Premier Inn Cowdray Ave Colchester
It was only due to local knowledge that we found this place, as most maps including Google, seem to have it located some further half mile east of where it really is!
A pleasent enough place for the price, especially for a short stay and is well within walking distance of the centre of Colchester and or the railway station, which is less than five minutes walk away.
Car parking can be a challenge as the Premier Inn is really part of the Albert Pub at the roundabout at the top of N Station Road. This in turn, means that Fridays especially, people visiting the pub take up many of the spaces used by the Inn but there are additional parking spaces at the rear of the property.
Naturally with a pub right alongside, Premier Inn itself does not have a bar, or offer food, but that really is no problem with the Albert Pub built right alongside.
Unique Qualities: A low cost stay, well within walking distance of the town in a clean and fairly modern building.
Although we paid around 69 Pounds, Premier inns often have sales on where at times the prices can go as low as 19 pounds per night.
Right next door to a Beefeater Restaurant
If its a clean room and bed you are seeking, this is probably the place for you and these prices can generally beat the local bed and breakfast establishments of the area which are in the main, some way out of Colchester and certainly not within a ten minute walk into the town centre as the Premier Inn certainly is either south up N Station Road or by cutting through the Castle grounds coming out at the east end of the main shopping area of town.
Premier Inns like the Albert Pub next door, are owned by Whitbread Plc as are, Beefeater, Table Table, Brewers Fayre, Taybarns and Costa Coffee
Or should you fancy something more spicy, then try Raj Palace just three minutes walk down N station Road towards town (see my restuarants)
Address: Cowdray Avenue, Colchester, CO1 1UT, United Kingdom
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: The top of N. Station Road at the roundabout junction with Cowdray Ave, and built right alongside the Albert Pub

If you prefer not to pay high prices for the two ancient hotels in the town centre, then this may be the place for you.
Rooms often start at less than one hundred pounds and it is easy to find as it is opposite the well signposted Rollerworld.
The hotel is however situated at the bottom of East Hill which unless you are moderatly fit, can be a challenge, as its almost a kilometres walk up hill to the east end of Colchester town which finishes by the Castle
Unique Qualities: One of several old buildings but which offers affordable prices for rooms
Address: East Street Colchester
Comparison: about average
Directions: moderatly easy to find from the A12 either from Ipswich in the north or London in the south.
Follow the signs for Rollerworld and this hotel is opposite
Best Western George Hotel
An ideal hotel for people interested in history as it is well over 500 years old. The 47 bedrooms often have to be navigated through quite narrow passageways and all room are on the second floor served only by fairly steep stairs so it is not suitable for those with a walking disability. With exposed beams, anyone over 5' 9 will have to watch their heads !
Unique Qualities: Much of the architecture is original, including low ceiling beams which you have to be very aware of and the ancient flooring of the upstairs rooms and passageways creak violently when they are stepped upon.
There is a very good restaurant and large bar area and a separate non-smoking lounge eating area.
At $150.00 per night, it is probably the more expensive of the town centre hotels and has generally a very full car park at the rear which can present a challenge with its very limited space.
Address: 116 High Street, Colchester, Essex CO1
Comparison: most expensive
Directions: Central Colchester, within 100 m of Colchester Castle
Phone: 01206 578494
Red Lion High St Colchester
An ancient hotel right in the centre of Colchesters High Street almost opposite the more expensive George Hotel. The Red Lion is not as nice as the George but with prices of around $90.00 is almost half of that of the George.
Unique Qualities: A hotel steeped in history being built in 1465. The downside is parking even to for a short time. To offload in the High Street can be a problem and it has no car park of its own. You are required to use a NCP car park some 5 mins away which in bad weather can inconvenient
Address: High Street, Colchester, CO1 1DJ
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: High Street, Central Colchester
