I have just returned from a two day break in one of our most historic towns in Britain,YORK.
The Romans called it Eboracum. the Saxons called it Eofowick and the Vikings called it Jorvik and lived there for generations and we are still finding Viking things around York to this day.
Well worth a visit, beautiful buildings, and a chance to re live another time. |
| | The Romans It was the arrival of the Ninth Legion which first marked the making of the city today we know as York.
Under the rule of Quintus Petillius Cerialis the makeshift defences were replaced by the famous walls which still surround the city today.
Eboracum translates as "the place of the yew trees".
The fort that the Romans built held some 6000 soldiers and their families.
It takes major construction within York to unearth Roman artefacts, despie the length of time they called York home. |
| | The Saxons and The Vikings It was a very unsettled time between the Roman occupation of York and the Saxons claiming it as theirs in the 6th Century.
The area was split in to two Kingdoms. One called Bernicia, the other Deira. The capital of Deira was York but the Saxons knew it as Eoforwic.
York enjoyed peace and wealth during the 8th Century. It didnt last long!!
in 866 the Vikings came to town! They could see the benefits that York had to offer and strengthened its defences.
They changed the city name Jorvik and were here to stay!
It was during Saxon times that a wooden Minster was built in the site of the present Minster. |
