My Marvellous Moleskiine
My pages will grow on Sicily as I slowly scan old photos and drawings (pre digital times) and as I return to this my second home again. I could not decide on any one photo to represent Sicily. So I have put up some maps I have drawn from my visits, in order to give you an idea of where I have travelled.

When travelling I always take with me a visual diary. All of my journeys throughout Europe have been on public transport. Sitting on a lot of train station platforms, trains, buses, ferry and in a few small airports, means I have more time to sketch, something that is not possible when driving. I consider this time one of the best parts of travelling; it adds to the anticipation of getting somewhere and the excitement of seeing something new. I prefer a visual diary to a camera because it records my mood, and forces me to observe in greater detail at the time. My drawing skills improved from page to page on every journey and, upon my return I have the most personal of souvenirs. Another benefit of the visual diary, which I observed on my third trip to Italy, was the reaction of others to the diaries. People are able to see, via my drawings, where I have been (I draw a lot of maps) and what I have seen. They can laugh at my interpretation of something that is familiar to them without understanding a word I speak.

Just home from Sicily - took the train - after a busy week in Rome it set us up in just the right state of relaxation for a fantastic jaunt around the island. What a gorgeous place! leyle

Many thanks Jeff for your tips. We usually use Lonely Planet but were debating on hiring a car to get to more inaccessable places, but you have convinced us to stick with our 'bible' the Lonely Planet. Thank you
