Lampedusa is an Italian island, which is closer to Tunisia than it is to Sicily and the African meets Italian culture is fantastic. The island had a big American base for quite a while after Libya, under Gheddafi, fired missiles at it in 1986. The missiles missed the island by a long shot but in came the Americans and the up side is they propped up the island economy and left pretty good infrastructure for us tourists.
The book to read before or during you time on Lampedusa is The Leopard (IL Gattopardo), by Giuseppe di Lampedusa. Some may have seen the film by Luchino Visconti staring Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale. |
