Every one has the loveliest photographs of the Spanish Steps. On the Rome forum a short while ago someone (I will not name names, will I Ellen) suggested that it would be a good place for someone to propose so I thought I would post this shot to show what the steps look like most of the time. PS: the steps are under the tourists but I still recommend you go there if not only for the shopping.

This is history at it’s best. One of the best ways to see the Roman Forum is with a tour run by students of history or actors. These tours are happening all the time and you can join them and leave them as you wish. The tour guides rely on tips so if you get a good one it’s nice to reward them for your lesson. Often they will try to entice you back to a performance at night, which I can’t comment on, as I did not take them up on the offer. I as a rule never do the tour thing, but here is one of those moments when it was worthwhile exercise.

We found this lovely little garden in Gianicolense to have a picnic in. It is so strange to be in the heart of Rome and be alone. This photo was taken from the gardens.

Directions: The gardens are located in the area called Gianicolense which is next to Trastevere. On all good tourist maps.

The view from the Castel S Angelo of Rome is amazing and there is a small cafe operating at the top which is ok.

Every one has written something on Piazza Navona not me; I just thought I would post this photograph of mine because I like it.

It is on all the maps and to do/see lists for Roma but…….but…. I am yet in my life to see a building that is as perfect in proportions and scale as the Pantheon. A truly beautiful piece of architecture. I like get there early before any tourists (as in this photograph) have a coffee and imagine how previous generations of tourists in Roman times might have reacted to such a site.

Oh… come on we all do it. It’s fun listening in on other people’s conversations and there is nothing better than hearing someone say something really stupid. So… why the Foro Romano? Well it was here that I nearly chocked to death laughing after over hearing what has gone down in my travel diaries as the dumbest tourist comment yet. I’ll set the scene…. a small boy holding his father’s hand is walking past two American tourists, a couple which I am behind. The child turns to his father and says something to his father in Italian. After a few meters the American woman turns to her partner and said, “isn’t that cute…even the children speak Italian”

Get here early before the tourists as the sun comes up and hits the marble. It's like having Rome to yourself.
